Measure Drapery

This guide helps you take accurate window measurements to ensure your draperies achieve the perfect fullness and elegant fall.

I. Tools You’ll Need

Essential Tool:

  • Steel Tape Measure — Fabric tapes can stretch and cause inaccurate measurements.

II. How to Determine Drapery Width

Your total curtain width depends on two key factors:

  • Rod Width
  • Desired Fullness Ratio

Core Formula

Total Curtain Width = Fullness Ratio × Rod Width

Step 1: Choose the Right Fullness Ratio

The fullness ratio determines how rich and layered your curtains will appear.
A higher ratio creates a more luxurious and voluminous drape.

Fullness Ratio Look Best For
Sleek and minimal Small windows, minimalist spaces
1.5× Balanced and standard Living rooms, bedrooms, most spaces
Rich, layered folds Formal settings, luxury interiors
2.5× Dramatic and opulent Hotels, large or statement windows

Professional Recommendations:

  • Blackout Fabrics: Use 2× or higher for better structure and opacity.
  • Sheers: Use 1.5×–2× for a light, airy appearance.

Step 2: Determine Curtain Rod Width

The rod width serves as the base measurement for your curtain width calculation.

Case 1: Rod Already Installed
Rod Width = Actual measured rod width

Case 2: Rod Not Installed Yet
Include the extension on both sides of the window for proper light control and stacking.

Formula:
Rod Width = Window Frame Width + (Extension × 2)

Recommended Extension:

  • Extend the rod 6–15 inches beyond each side of the window frame.
    • Smaller windows: closer to 6 inches
    • Larger windows: up to 15 inches for better proportions

Example:
Window Frame Width = 36"
Extension = 6" per side
Rod Width = 36 + (6 × 2) = 48"

Step 3: Calculate Total Curtain Width

Use your selected fullness ratio and rod width.

Example:
Rod Width = 48"
Fullness Ratio = 2×
Total Curtain Width = 48 × 2 = 96"

Two-Panel Tip:
If ordering two panels, divide the total width by 2.
96" ÷ 2 = 48" per panel

III. How to Measure Curtain Length

Core Formula

Final Curtain Length = Rod-to-Floor Height + Hem Adjustment

Step 1: Position the Rod

Install the rod 6–10 inches above the window frame, or closer to the ceiling for a taller, more elegant look.

Step 2: Take the Measurement

Measure straight down from the top of the rod (or track) to the floor using your steel tape measure.

Step 3: Choose Your Finish Style

Style Hem Adjustment Look Best For
Floating –½" (½" above the floor) Clean and practical Kitchens, kids’ rooms, high-traffic areas
Kiss the Floor 0" (just touching the floor) Crisp and modern Most contemporary interiors
Puddling +2" to +4" (pooling on the floor) Luxurious and dramatic Formal living rooms, bedrooms, grand spaces

Note: Extending beyond +4" may make cleaning and daily use more difficult.

Example:
Rod-to-Floor Height = 80"
Style = Floating (–½")
Final Curtain Length = 80 – 0.5 = 79.5"
